Charlotte Banks Letter to the Editor on Health Systems Session

In my line of work, I pride myself on knowing quite a bit about Tangipahoa Parish and just when I think I know all there is to know, I learn something new.  This is all due to Leadership Tangipahoa, an amazing program I have the pleasure of being a part of.  On the third Thursday of every month I get to meet with a great group of individuals from different professions and we learn about the qualities of Tangipahoa Parish.

Since September, every month has been an interesting adventure and when I think, how are we going to top this activity, the next month’s activity proves to be just as good or even better.  January’s class was no exception to the rule as we were afforded the opportunity to learn about healthcare, one of the most controversial topics in the news today, in Tangipahoa and although we weren’t able to visit all the healthcare facilities in the parish, the three we did visit left an impression that will last a lifetime.

We started our day at Sunrise Senior Living at Live Oak Village in Hammond, LA. and what a refreshing way to start the day.  I was very intrigued with the quality of care that Sunrise provides for seniors.  They have truly created a new approach to senior living that emphasizes a better qualify of life.  The services and care offered at Sunrise runs the gamut from assisted living to independent living and affords residents the sense of independence and the luxury of living life to the fullest.

Our next stop was North Oaks Health System where we were enthralled with Mr. Jimmy Cathey’s, CEO North Oaks, presentation on how health care has evolved from the “good ole days” to now and quality healthcare.  His openness about healthcare and its reform were enlightening and very informative and his use of “Jimmisms”, Jimmy’s point of view, were fun and entertaining.  He identified how healthcare, government and education are all linked together and he pointed out that healthcare as we know it today will drastically change.  We also had the opportunity to tour the diagnostic center where patient privacy, comfort and convenience are a priority.  Many outpatient services were relocated from the health’s system hospital campuses to this one convenient location.

The last stop of the day was at Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence, LA.  Although this was not my first visit to Lallie Kemp, it had been at least 20 years since I’d been there and little did I know that I would be thoroughly impressed with the progress of this hospital.  Lallie Kemp as I knew it in the past no longer exists.  Presentations by the staff revealed a new energy and focus on quality patient healthcare and after touring the campus, my tainted view about healthcare at Lallie Kemp completely changed.

Healthcare is one of the most controversial and debated topics in the news today and I am glad to say that in Tangipahoa Parish we are serving our communities well on that front.  North Oaks and Lallie Kemp offer a full-range of healthcare services and Sunrise Senior Living offers specialized and individualized healthcare services and they all offer quality patient care.  Thank you Sunrise Senior Living, North Oaks Health System and Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center for making our day with healthcare interesting, informative and productive.  Knowledge is power!

I would also like to thank North Oaks Health System for sponsoring a healthy and nutritious lunch and last but not least, a very special thank you goes out to my sponsor the Hammond Chamber for allowing me to increase my knowledge of our beautiful parish.
